Melasma

Melasma care at Gambhir M.D. on Central Park South, NYC. Physician-led, cautious treatment with VI Peel, Moxi laser, microneedling, and clinical skincare.

Melasma is a common condition that causes patchy, darker areas on the skin, often on the cheeks, forehead, or upper lip. It is influenced by sun, hormones, and heat, and it can be stubborn. Melasma is managed rather than “cured”, but with the right care at our New York City practice it can be improved and kept under control, bringing back a calmer, more even complexion.

Services

VI Peel

A medical-grade peel, including a version made for pigment, can lighten melasma and even the tone, used carefully and in a series.

Moxi laser

Used at gentle settings, Moxi can support a more even tone in melasma. With melasma, cautious is the rule, because the wrong approach can make it worse.

Microneedling – SKIN PEN

Microneedling can help support even tone and skin quality in melasma. As with all melasma treatments, we use gentle protocols to avoid triggering more pigment.

Alastin A-Luminate Brightening Serum

Alastin’s targeted brightening product. Used consistently, it helps fade melasma over time.

Alastin HydraTint Pro Mineral Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 36

The single most important product for melasma. A tinted mineral sunscreen protects against both UV and the visible-light triggers that drive pigmentation.

Alastin C-RADICAL Defense Antioxidant Serum

A vitamin C serum that adds antioxidant protection and helps support a more even tone.

Alastin Renewal Retinol

Encourages skin renewal, which helps surface pigment fade over time. Used at night, starting carefully, on healed skin.

Melasma responds to steady care at home as much as anything we do in the office. A few habits, kept up over time, protect your results and prevent flares.

Rigorous sun and heat protection

Sun and heat are the two biggest drivers of melasma. Wear a tinted mineral broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning, even indoors near a window, and reapply through the day. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses on long days outdoors are worth the trouble. Heat matters too. Avoid prolonged time in saunas, hot yoga, or near hot stoves, which can trigger new pigment.

Be gentle with your skin

Irritation makes melasma worse. Skip harsh scrubs, aggressive acids, and physical exfoliation. A soft cleanser and a simple routine protect your progress.

Consider hormonal factors

Melasma is often influenced by hormones. If you take oral contraceptives or hormone therapy, mention it at your consultation. Sometimes a small change in this area meaningfully reduces melasma over time.

Be patient and consistent

Melasma is managed, not cured. Steady care over months brings real change. Sporadic effort brings little.
