Kybella

Physician-led Kybella at Gambhir M.D. The only FDA-approved injectable for fullness under the chin.

“Kybella is the one injectable used to treat fullness under the chin and jawline primarily. It uses deoxycholic acid, a substance much like one the body already makes to break down fat. Placed carefully, it clears away the fat cells in that small area for good. For the right patient, it is a way to refine the chin and jawline without surgery. And like everything we do, it starts with an honest look at whether it is the right choice for you.”

About Kybella

Kybella is an injectable treatment for fullness under the chin, what many people call a “double chin.” It is the only injectable approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for this area. The active ingredient, deoxycholic acid, breaks down fat cells beneath the chin, and your body clears them away over the following weeks. Because the treated cells are gone, they cannot store fat again, so the result is lasting. Kybella works well for the right patient, but it treats fat, not skin, and it is not the answer for every neck. At our practice, we look honestly at whether it is the right tool for you.

The area under the chin is small, and it sits close to nerves that shape your smile. That is why this treatment belongs in experienced, physician hands. Your care is led by physicians who have given injectable treatments since 2005 and who know the anatomy of the face and neck deeply. We will tell you honestly whether Kybella is right for you, and if it is not, we will say so.

Kybella treats fullness under the chin, the area many people call a “double chin.” Many people carry a little extra fullness there. For some it comes with age or weight. For many, it is simply genetic and stays even with a healthy diet and regular exercise. Kybella is the only injectable approved by the FDA for this area.

Most people tolerate it well. We use ice and numbing, and the medicine contains a mild anesthetic. You may feel some stinging or warmth during the injections, which passes quickly.

Kybella is given as a series. Most people need about two to four sessions, spaced roughly a month apart. We give you an honest estimate at your consultation.

Swelling under the chin is expected, and it can be noticeable. It is a normal sign the treatment is working. It is usually greatest in the first few days and eases over a couple of weeks. Many people plan around it.

Kybella works gradually. Most people start to see a change after a couple of months, as the series continues.

Yes, in an important sense. The treated fat cells are gone and cannot store fat again. A large weight gain later can still change the area, since the remaining cells can grow.

There is no real downtime, but the swelling is visible, so it is more about appearance than activity. Many people return to work right away; others prefer to plan around the first few days.

Kybella is FDA-approved and has a strong safety record in trained hands. The rarer, more serious risks are a temporary uneven smile (from a nearby nerve) and temporary trouble swallowing. In studies, both were uncommon and resolved on their own.

Swelling, bruising, numbness, redness, tenderness, and small firm areas under the chin. These are temporary and usually settle within a few weeks.

No. Kybella reduces fat, not loose or sagging skin. If loose skin is your main concern, we will tell you honestly and talk through better options for you.

Kybella is for adults. It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for people whose main concern is loose skin, or for those with an infection or certain conditions in the treatment area. We review all of this at your consultation.
